Most full bathroom renovations land between $15,000 and $35,000, with the national average sitting around $26,000.
Small ensuites with new tiles and fixtures can start around $10,000–$15,000, while luxury projects with stone finishes or heated floors and or micro cement run $35,000 and above .
The biggest cost drivers are plumbing relocation, expensive fixtures and finishes. We always recommend budgeting a 10–20% contingency for surprises behind the walls or under the foundation.
A cosmetic update takes 2–3 weeks; a full rebuild of a standard family bathroom typically runs 4–6 weeks.
Here's our usual schedule: demolition 1–2 days, rough-in plumbing and electrical about a week, waterproofing and tiling 1–2 weeks, then fixtures and finishing in the final week.
Complex jobs or large renovations with two or more stages can stretch to 12 weeks . It is always quicker to do whole job in one go, but often customers that live in a house being renovated, have to have one bathroom and a toilet available.
Not always. Cosmetic work like swapping a vanity or retiling usually doesn't need approval, but in Victoria a building permit is required if the work affects structure, plumbing or electrical systems. Moving drains must comply with the Plumbing Code of Australia, electrical work must be certified, and heritage overlays trigger planning permits . Permits cost roughly $500–$2,000 and take 2–8 weeks to process, so we factor that into your timeline from day one .
Waterproofing is the single most important step in a bathroom renovation. It must comply with Australian Standard AS 3740, with membranes extending 150mm up walls and 100mm beyond the shower area, and reaching 1800mm high in enclosed showers. Poor waterproofing leads to mould, timber rot and insurance disputes, so we always hand over a compliance certificate on completion
A proper quote itemises everything: demolition and waste removal, plumbing, waterproofing, tiling, fixtures, electrical and labour Labour typically accounts for 30–40% of the total . Watch for exclusions such as asbestos removal, structural repairs or repainting adjacent walls, and be wary of vague quotes . We give you a fixed, itemised quote so there are no surprises mid-project.
Yes, most of our clients do. You'll be without that bathroom for the duration, so we recommend planning around it, especially in single-bathroom homes. We work standard hours, keep the site secure and dust-controlled daily, and disconnect and reconnect services so the rest of your home stays fully functional. Some of our clients with one bathroom have signed up for a gym membership to have showers or just visited they relatives more often. Why not may get fit at same time.
The big ones we see are skipping proper waterproofing compliance, inadequate ventilation that invites mould, choosing tile sizes that crack on uneven floors, underestimating plumbing rerouting costs, and skimping on storage. Most of this happens when customers using builder without proper licence or insurance. Those builders typically can undercut our prices for the reasons mentioned earlier.
If you have a family, keep at least one bath. Agents report many buyers expect a bathtub in a family home, and removing the only one can dent resale appeal by 5–10%. In apartments or smaller footprints, a walk-in shower maximises space and looks modern. Compromises include shower-bath combos or compact freestanding tubs
Older homes often hide rotten timber, outdated pipework, mould or asbestos, and these can add thousands to a budget . We include a 10–20% contingency for exactly this reason, and we stop work, photograph the issue, and give you a written variation with options before touching anything . No surprises on the final invoice. Asbestos, for example, ads roughly extra $2000 to a project and it is handled by a professional asbestos removalists.
We organise all materials and professional tradie supplies. We used to organise fixtures as well, but we have found that most customers benefit from selecting their own fixtures and tiles. This gives them a personal touch on the project, and most suppliers can deliver directly to site for free or a small charge. If you prefer a fully managed service, we are happy to organise everything for you.
